Who We Are and What We Do

Every Alice Springs family should have their own regular GP, with whom they are familiar and who they trust.

However when your regular GP is closed, and you need urgent medical care, Dr in the House will be there for you and your family.

Our doctors will gladly help patients with episodic conditions that are acute. These may commonly include:

  • Ear ache
  • Gastro
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin infections and rashes
  • Asthma
  • Acute respiratory infections
  • Eye complaints
  • Ailments that commonly afflict the elderly
  • Migraines and acute headaches
  • Neck back and hip pain

Dr in the House GP’s carry a bag of equipment, including some common medications, so patients can likely start treatment immediately.

Following the home visit, we send a medical report to your regular GP the next day, ensuring continuity of care.

Dr in the House will also bulk bill all patients with a Medicare or Gold DVA card.

So, if you or a loved one needs to see a doctor urgently (and it’s not life-threatening), but your GP is closed, Dr in the House, and save the hospital Emergency Department for emergencies.

When we have you covered

Dr in the House will initially be providing urgent after-hours care every every Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Phone lines are open all week to answer questions and take bookings.

If it is an emergency, call 000!

Dr in the House provides urgent medical care to Alice Springs patients in the after hours. It is not a service for medical emergencies. If symptoms are critical or life-threatening, you should call triple zero (000) or go straight to the Alice Springs Hospital Emergency Department.

About our Doctors

All Dr in the House doctors are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), as required by the Medical Board of Australia and carry full medical indemnity insurance. Look to our Facebook, Instagram and website for regular updates about new additions to the team!

What if I am not covered by Medicare?

Don’t stress! Dr in the House will still gladly send a doctor to your home, hotel or caravan park, however, private fees will apply. In many instances, this will be claimable against your travel insurance.

We would love feedback over our startup process so that we can learn and improve our service! Dr in the House may ask you complete a short survey or answer a few additional questions for us.

We are not a replacement for your regular GP!

We will not treat requests for routine medical care. All routine medical treatment, such as prescription repeats, immunisations, referrals, check ups or chronic disease management, should be handled by your local Alice Springs GP. Many Alice Springs GP’s have an online booking service for their regular appointments. Go to your GP’s website and try and book online! After your home visit, Dr in the House will send a report through to your regular GP so they are kept in the know. This is essential to maintaining continuity of care, and providing you with the best possible all round health care.

What to do next

Speak calmly and politely to our trained triage and administration staff.

Have the following information ready for our operator:

  • the patient’s full name and date of birth
  • the patient’s Medicare or DVA card
  • the patient’s street address
  • the patient’s email address
  • a description of the patient’s illness
  • the name of the patient’s regular doctor or surgery they attend.

Then wait for us to send one of our doctors to your door as soon as we possibly can!
